Current projects

These are the projects we are currently working on. They range from projects we are managing directly to university chapter projects where our members are mentoring the students. If you would like to learn more about the projects or get involved with one, please let us know through our Get Involved page. Boqueron Water, Guatemala – WPP Service Corp  This community of over 3000 is currently without a water source and is trucking in water after a new well that was drilled did not find sufficient water.  The feasibility study was completed and delivered to the community with a recommendation to build a series of lift stations to pump spring water to the community.  The Team will be working with a local engineer to complete the design with the hope that the construction will be done by the community and municipality this fall.  

Polo Water, Guatemala – WPP Service Corp Seven communities totaling over 4000 residents asked for a study to improve the sustainability of their current water system.  The feasibility study was completed and delivered to the community with a recommendation to connect the well pump to the electrical grid.  A donation of water meters were secured from Bader Meter and will also be installed by the community.  We are hopeful that the meters will provide valuable information on the typical water usage by Guatemalan Communities.

El Salitre pedestrian bridge, Guatemala – MSOE    El Salitre lacks access to the clinics, schools and markets in Joyabaj during the rainy season.  The Team will design and construction of a suspended cable pedestrian bridge to provide the community this important access.  Construction is planned for summer 2015.

Chitom Primary School, Guatemala – MSOE  The community of Chitom received approval for an official Ministry of Education primary school three years ago – but they do not have a building to meet in.  A Team will be designing and building an elementary school for the approximately 70 students.  Construction is planned for spring 2015.  

Pajuya Water, Guatemala – UW Madison The approximately 60 families of Pajuya were without a reliable potable water source and system.  The UW Madison team, under the mentorship of Kevin Hagen, designed and constructed a new system this spring to the delight of the community.  The inauguration was held on May 15th.

Aseceros Water, Guatemala – UW Madison The approximately 50 families of Asecueros has outgrown their existing potable water system and is rationing water to its residents.  The Team is evaluating the existing potable water system and hopes to implement enhancements in January 2015.

Rio Chiquito vehicle bridge, Guatemala – WPP Service Corp  A bridge providing access to over 10,000 people was washed out last fall and the municipality asked for technical assistance in reconstructing a new, sustainable, bridge.  The design was completed by the Service Corp Team and construction is well underway by the municipality.  The team is coordinating with a local engineer for onsite inspection. 

Sechum Bridge Project, Guatemala – Marquette EWB & WPPThe Senior Design Team has wrapped up their vehicle bridge design project.  The bridge will provide important access to schools, health care and markets for the three nearby communities.  Construction is planned for January 2015. 

Pedestrian Bridge Project, Guatemala – Marquette Another Senior Design Team is forming and will be led by Benjie Hayek to design and construct a suspended cable pedestrian bridge.  Construction is scheduled for 2015.

Joyabaj High School, Guatemala – WPP Three years ago, the City of Joyabaj established its first High School with 60 students.  Now there are nearly 250 students and the High School needs a new home.  Mark Rapant is leading a team to renovate an existing building purchased by the Municipality to accommodate the High School.  An evaluation study is underway with hopes of construction in 2015.

Chilaj Water Filter, Guatemala – WPP Service Corp  The City of Joyabaj currently receives sediment loaded water during the rainy season.  The local hospital and municipality have requested assistance in improving the water quality for the over 20,000 residents.  The concrete tank was constructed in March and the final plumbing and sand placement will occur in late May.  Startup operations will begin in June.  Funding is being provided by a Rotary Global Grant.  

Elementary School, Guatemala – Kansas State Kansas State is being added to the Cluster Program and is evaluating three potential school sites for their first project.  Construction is scheduled for 2015.
